Chapter 16

Jessica was engrossed with the data on her tablet when a knock sounded at the door. She practically jumped out of her skin. Again. “Dammit!”

She shook off the jitters and crossed to the door. “Yes? Who's there?”

“Madam Zana. The man you asked for is here with me.”

“Oh, yeah,” replied a man’s voice from the other side.

“Shut up, Doug.” This was Zana.

Just what I need.

Jessica opened the door and found Madam Zana crammed in the hallway with a bearded, heavyset man in coveralls. Predictably, his name-tag read, ‘Doug.’

Doug looked Jessica up and down, grinning lasciviously. “How may I service you?”

“Eww. First, knock it off. Just try and not be such a… man for a few minutes. Please.”

Doug looked crestfallen.

Idiot.

“Doug, do you have any experience with biologic propagation systems?”

“Sure. I’ve installed and configured basic ones at the clinic here. That’s the easy part. But I’m not an expert. The hard part is getting the software. Do you have it?”

“I do. On my tablet. But I don’t have any of the hardware.”

“That’s not a problem. Those units are all pretty modular and scale up from a common core. I should have a lot of the stuff I need down on my cart. And the rest I can get pretty quick from the medical supply shop. What’s it for?”

“A patient of mine. That’s all you need to know.”

“Um…”

Jessica turned to Madam Zana. “You said he could be trusted.”

“Oh, he can be. Unless he wants his wife to find out about where all his overtime money goes.”

Doug looked at the floor, somehow having gone from a perv to a petulant child in the span of a few minutes. “So. When do I start?”

Jessica crossed her arms and nodded. “Right away. Get whatever relevant gear you have and then come back up here.”

Madam Zana gave the doctor a curt nod. “Come find me if you require any additional assistance.” She escorted Doug back out into the hall.
